This commitment builds on our existing gender equality strategy and demonstrates our commitment to do more, with a 10% flexibility to reflect the timescale, the desire to develop the right internal talent and existing availability of senior women in the financial services industry. We are working hard to continually refine our plans in order to deliver on this stretching target. Specifically through:-

Strong foundations

In our first year post signing the Charter we have seen a 1.5% increase in the number of women in our S4+ levels. Understanding that we have set ourselves a challenging target, we acknowledge that this increase reflects a growth rate of a foundation year which has set us up for long term and sustainable growth.

Accelerating change

In 2017 we have launched a number of programmes. For example:- unconscious bias training, targeted female development courses, 30% Club mentoring, Santander Returnships Programme and 50/50 slate for all open roles where possible. These programmes will help accelerate the pace of change over the coming years. However, they will require time for their impact to be fully realised.

Strategic focus

Our three streams of delivery that we hope will accelerate the pace of change and help us reach our goal, sustainably:-

  1. leadership Accountability
  2. Internal Mobility
  3. External Recruitment

As part of our commitment to be an employer of choice, we proactively seek sponsorship opportunities that resonate with women. These sponsorship opportunities reflect and reinforce our long-term gender ambitions. For example: -

  • FT Women at the Top Summit where we participated in the Change Beyond the Boardroom session
  • Women of the Future Awards which convenes and celebrates strong talent under 35’s
  • We will be sole sponsors of Equal Lives, a new, cutting-edge research from Business in the Community (BiTC), allowing us to look at gender disparity in a revolutionary way.

We will continue to identify appropriate partners to engage with to build our brand in the market as a bank where women want to work, thrive and succeed. Additionally, our senior leadership play a key role in our efforts. Chris Sullivan, Head of Santander Corporate Banking was recently appointed our executive sponsor for gender diversity.
